| News | USA Government blames North Korea for the WannaCry Ransomware Attack

You might have surely heard about the worldwide ransomware attack that was launched during the month of May this year. The attack targeted around three lakh computers worldwide in around hundred and fifty countries. The ransomware launched a global attack and demanded a ransom of $300 in bitcoin which if not paid within the time limit of three days would double up. People were also threatened that their encrypted files would be permanently deleted if the ransom is not paid. A ransomware is basically a malicious software which is used by the attackers to demand ransom in return of the files that are encrypted by it.

Now the government of The United States of America has blamed North Korea and held it responsible for the global attack. The said claims have also been backed by the government of Australia. As per the White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert “The attack was widespread and cost billions, and North Korea is directly responsible.”, stated the published piece in Wall Street Journal. He also wrote “North Korea has acted especially badly, largely unchecked, for more than a decade, and its malicious behaviour is growing more egregious. WannaCry was indiscriminately reckless.” He also stated that the allegation is based on evidence and that such disruptions put the lives at risk. A joint statement was also released by the Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull and the Foreign Minister Julie Bishop which read “The WannaCry attack showed the rapid, global damage cybercrime can cause to businesses and critical infrastructure.”

This all has come at the time when there is a lot of tension going on between USA and North Korea due to North Korea’s open threats to USA along with its nuclear programmes and testing of missiles. A US official as per The Washington Post has said that Trump’s administration would urge the allies so as to counter North Korea’s cyber attacks capabilities and implement the relevant United Nations Security Council sanctions. North Korea has been alleged for many cyber attacks in previous few years as well causing huge losses. Though North Korea has dismissed any such allegations but still there is no smoke without fire! Isn’t it?
