A RedDrop mobile malware is a notorious infection which records audio and tricks the user to pay premium charges to avail a particular service. It is one of the most sophisticated Android malware which has been distributed on a large scale.

According to the findings of Wandera, the Reddrop malware is an infection that is generally hidden in a set of third-party apps which are downloaded outside official Android channels. These applications provide additional facilities to the user which includes image editors, calculators or games. This malware has harmful capabilities which are used by developers to blackmail the victims.

The RedDrop malware can collect the user data which includes photos, local files, device information and even the nearby Wi-Fi networks. According to a study conducted by Wandera, the RedDrop malware was found in around 53 Android apps which are distributed from over 4,000 domains. These apps are not distributed by Google play store but from third-party apps which are presented to the victim by way of advertisements. When it comes to distributing malicious apps, Google has stated that it is removing thousands of malicious applications per day.

Wandera has provided an example called as “CuteActress” in which the user rubs the screen to reveal the image of an improperly dressed female. When the user touches the screen, they forward SMS message to a premium service, which results in charges on the mobile bill.

The targeted users get genuine looking emails which contain .doc, .txt, and other similar attachments. These attachments can be named as anything which can grab the user’s attention and triggers him/her to open the attachment. As soon as the user opens this attachment, the malware infects the user’s computer system.
