Microsoft, the ever-evolving Tech giant, introduced Chromium-powered Edge web browser for Windows 10 users last month. And now, after much anticipation, Microsoft officially brought Microsoft Edge for Mac on 20th May 2019. A preview version of Microsoft Edge browser is available for download to the Mac users from Microsoft Edge Insider site.
The plans of launching Microsoft edge browser for Mac were made public on 6th May at Microsoft’s Annual BUILD Developers Conference.
The new Microsoft web browser is powered by Chromium, Google’s open-source rendering engine, renowned for powering other popular browsers including Chrome & Opera.
In addition to that, the new Edge Browser incorporates features such as Touch Bar support (with media controls) & tab switching just like Safari. Certain optimizations have been specifically added to Mac Edge to give it a typical MacOS Application appearance.
The UI of Microsoft Edge Browser for Mac has been tweaked, allowing users to enhance their browser’s capabilities by installing Chrome extensions. The new privacy feature of Microsoft edge for Mac will allow the users to select from different levels privacy controls.
Microsoft has also brought SmartScreen Functionality to MacOS by including Microsoft Defender Browser Protection to the Mac Edge Browser. Once this extension is installed, the browser will inquire the SmartScreen if the site entered in the search bar is menacing. In case it is, the user will be blocked from visiting/browsing that site.
The users have the privilege of disabling this Defender Extension anytime using “edge://flags”. Users can choose “Disable” from the drop-down mentioned in front of “Enable Microsoft Defender Browser Protection Extension” option.
The Mac Edge Preview Builds will be made available through Canary, Dev & Beta preview channels.
Microsoft has announced to reinforce Canary Builds of Edge for Mac version 10.12 & above on daily basis. However, weekly update for Dev Builds is expected to be released in coming weeks– to which Beta Build updates will follow.
Microsoft has also announced to launch new privacy controls & a collections feature for Mac Edge soon. The collections feature will help the users to collect images, texts & other common notes from the web. Images, Text & Videos could be dragged & dropped into Word & Excel files.
The aforesaid features will be available for the users to test in the upcoming weeks. Meanwhile, the company has urged Users to download Microsoft edge for Mac & share feedback by clicking on “Send Feedback” smiley.
