The full text of the email reads as:
Google pulled the plug on its social networking platform Google + in October last year. The move came after the company discovered a software glitch that gave third party developers access to Google+ user profile data. In total personal information of around 500,000 Google+ accounts were potentially exposed even when the relevant information was not marked as public. Though there are no evidences of the data being misused, Google decided to abandon the consumer facing Google+ site.
The API Bug was just the trigger. Even earlier Google+ was a dead product walking. The Internet based social networking platform owned & operated by Google had no takers & hence was a huge failure. The discovery of the bug acted as a final nail in Google+’s coffin.
This is not all! On 10th December 2018 Google announced that a fresh Google+ bug exposed the data of 52.5 million users. The bug granted apps full access to profile information of users even when they had set their permissions to private. The company hence hastened the shut of the little-loved social media platform earlier than initially planned i.e. from August 2019 to April 2019.
Data misuse scandals like Cambridge Analytica have impaired the reputation of popular social media platforms like FaceBook & Twitter, but Google+ isn’t similarly impacted. After all, Google is all set to disown the social network Google+ as it realizes that the platform remained largely abandoned.
