Facebook Shuts Down Network Of Fake Pakistani Propaganda Accounts

About: Facebook has been aggressively taking steps to control the extent of misinformation forward of the General Election in India that is about to be held in starting from April 11.

The social networking giant has made an official media announcement about it on April 2, 2019.

Facebook Inc has removed and taken down multiple accounts & groups for violating the company’s rules & regulations on co-ordinated inauthentic behavior or spam.

Instagram & Facebook deletes 103 pages that originated in Pakistan as per Nathaniel Gleicher, the head of cybersecurity facebook.

 

Facebook Inc also added that these accounts were linked to individuals working to publicize division of Pakistan’s Military establishment or relation with Inter-Services Public Relations.

 

Quoting Gleicher, The Dawn Newspaper published that the takedown is because there is this network of fake accounts are concealing their true identity and make these pages look independent, that in fact, they are not.

 

 

Facebook said that this fake down nearly 24 pages, 57 individual accounts, 7 Groups & 15 Instagram account that include General Pakistani Interest Pages & Kashmir Community pages.

 

These groups frequently posted about local and political news including topics like the Indian government, Political leaders & military.

 

Facebook also revealed that those behind these pages and accounts attempted to conceal their identities.

 

Facebook stated that its investigation found a Pakistani Military Link, with real accounts of ISPR employees & a network of fake accounts created by them.

 

A bulk of these breaches occurred last month when India & Pakistan swapped resentments following the Jaish-e-Mohammad sponsored Pulwama attack that murdered 44 Jawans of Central Reserve Police Force.

 

The Pakistan based pages entertaining in this behavior incorporated Halka Halka, Kashmir for Kashmiris & Pakistan Army the best.

 

It also added that about 2.8 million accounts accompanied one or more of these pages, about 4,700 accounts enrolled at least of these groups and around 1,050 accounts supported one or more of these Instagram accounts.

 

Gleicher said that for security purposes we cannot get too specific about how we make these links, because these sort of monitoring is an ongoing activity.

 

We do not generally inform the individuals involved but we are in touch with the drafting communities of those countries.

 

When questioned about the policymakers they had reached out in Pakistan, he named the Prime Minister office & Social Media Advisor.
